Fibromyalgia Treatments

Fibromyalgia Treatments

Just like many other known ailments, the treatment for each case of Fibromyalgia is different. This is because each person experiences the syndrome differently in terms of the symptoms and depending on their age, different treatments will be more suited for them.

Treating the Pain

There are many options for treatment of the pain associated with many cases of Fibromyalgia Syndrome depending on the severity of pain and age of the patient. The goal of such treatments is not necessarily to completely remove the pain, but to allow the patient to live a functional lifestyle without all the pain and discomfort caused by their condition.

For mild cases of pain, commonly available, over-the-counter pain medication is typically used. When possible, other techniques can be applied, such as brain mapping, to determine the exact locations affected by the pain. By determining these locations, stronger pain killers may be used to target severe pain otherwise unaffected by over-the-counter medication.

Mental Treatments

There are other, non-drug related therapies to relieve pain caused by Fibromyalgia syndrome. Some examples would include psycho therapy and sleep therapy.

Psycho therapy is used mainly to reduce the stress levels of the patient to relieve or reduce the symptoms of the syndrome. The goal of psycho therapy is to introduce the patient to better ways to cope with stress as well as changing their belief systems with respect to stress. Typically, this treatment spans a number of sessions with a psychologist and can not only treat the causes of Fibromyalgia, but can also reduce the resulting depression it causes.

Sleep therapy is another treatment method that is used. The goal of this treatment method is to facilitate a deeper sleep for patients on a consistent basis to promote muscle repair. Often, sleeping pills are used with varying degrees of success.

Other Treatment Methods

Quite often when other treatment methods have failed, people suffering from Fibromyalgia Syndrome look for alternative treatments in the form of alternative methods. Some examples are visiting a chiropractor, hypnosis, and acupuncture. These methods do not cure the condition, but help to make life more livable by reducing the pain.

Though there are many methods of relieving the pain caused by Fibromyalgia, these methods are not necessarily for everyone or even for you. Be sure to consult a professional before engaging in any of these treatment methods to ensure that you will be doing what is best for you and your situation.
